Symbol formats and exchanges

SheetsFinance covers over 80,000 securities. Every asset uses an exchange identifier in the ticker so the data service routes the request to the correct market. The general format is SYMBOL.EXCHANGE, where the exchange suffix tells SheetsFinance which market to query.

How symbol structure works

Most equity symbols use the format TICKER.EXCHANGE. For example, a stock listed on the London Stock Exchange uses .L as its suffix, so the full symbol is VOD.L. A stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange uses .TO, so the full symbol is SHOP.TO.

Some asset classes use a caret prefix instead of a suffix. Market indices begin with ^ followed by the index symbol, for example ^GSPC for the S&P 500 or ^DJI for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Filter by exchange

When using Symbol Search, you can filter by exchange to narrow results. In the web Symbol Search, use the exchange filter at the top of the table. In the Google Sheets sidebar, filter the search results by exchange to find the exact market you need.

Non-equity exchange codes

Some asset classes use a single catch-all exchange code rather than a market-specific suffix:

• CRYPTO — Cryptocurrency coins and tokens

• FOREX — Foreign exchange rates

• INDEX — Market indices

• COMMODITY — Commodities

These appear in the exchange column of Symbol Search and in the exchange field of companyInfo so you can identify the asset class.

Search methods

Web Symbol Search

Visit sheetsfinance.com/symbol-search to browse the full database. Use the search bar or the exchange filter at the top of the table to narrow results.

Google Sheets sidebar

Open Extensions > SheetsFinance > Symbol Search inside Google Sheets. Selecting a symbol in the table automatically sends the ticker into the Function Generator, so you can search and build formulas without switching tabs.

Tips

• Type a partial company name if you do not know the exact ticker.

• Always include the exchange suffix when entering a symbol manually.
